Cloth Diapers and Foot Massages? My guest post includes both!

I wrote and published a guest post on the Knickernappies Blog today.  My intentions were to just talk about all the cloth diapers and accessories I'd buy if I were going to build a stash with only Knickernappies products.  What the blog post turned into was more of a comedy/fantasy post and I had myself cracking up by the end of it.

Below is the photo that accompanies the blog post.  To read the post in it's entirety please visit the Knickernappies Cloth Diaper Blog.

Painting a face to the woman behind Sweet Pea Diapers!

Contributed by Bert

You know how you love a product but the face behind that product is nameless and faceless for that matter? Like when I think about Cocoa Cola, in my mind I see this red and white can; when I think about its creator, its CEO, he or she is faceless.

Well, let me put a name and paint a face to the woman behind Sweet Pea Diapers. I first came in contact with Nancy when I was a relatively new blogger. My contributing writing job with She Thinks Media had been underway for two months and I had received a diaper of Nancy’s to review. It was the first all-in-three (AI3) I had seen let alone used. I really grew to love this diaper and it was the first non-pocket diaper I had used on one of my kids. As a new blogger it can be intimidating to ask companies to sponsor a giveaway so I nervously asked Nancy if she would be willing to sponsor one for my blog. Graciously, Nancy said yes and that, my friend, was just the beginning of my learning about one of Nancy’s great qualities.

Nancy is gracious and generous. She’s generous in the knowledge that she has for cloth diapers and the accessories. She’s helpful to new cloth diapering mamas who can sometimes feel lost in the vast ocean of cloth diapers. She graciously hosts giveaways in the forms of Twitter parties and sponsored blog giveaways. Basically Nancy’s nice. If there ever was a person you should buy from because she’s a nice person it’s Nancy from Sweet Pea.

Nancy's Sweet Pea Diapers brand has been growing quickly in popularity among cloth diapering families and retailers.  No doubt due to the woman behind the business and due to the fact that Sweet Pea products are so great.

Sweet Pea Diapers can be found at a variety of cloth diaper retailers in the USA & Canada and if you're a retailer looking to add a new line to your store you should consider Sweet Pea Diapers!

Fish Tank Ammonia Remover, Is it the magic cure for your cloth diapers?

Guest Post by Rebecca

This is a re-post by request from Rebecca of Mod'N'Natural Blog.  She was so excited about her success in treating her cloth diapers ammonia issues that she wanted to share with the world, or at least our little world, her amazing results.

I have been cloth diapering for 4 years, now. The first round, with my oldest daughter, was the easiest (minus some build-up/leaking, a latex allergy and a yeast battle when she was introduced to food). The second round with my youngest, has been much more difficult, time consuming and a huge learning experience for me.

I have never experienced synthetic fiber allergies and ammonia build-up until my youngest came along. Honestly, I didn’t even know ammonia was an issue until I started using natural fibers and clean rinsing detergents. I found my solution originally in two popular cloth diaper safe, clean-rinsing detergents. But what do you do when your original solution fails you and fails badly? What do you do for the poor baby who has burned genitals and blisters from the diapers that are suppose to be better for them?! What do you do if your baby can’t wear disposable diapers either?!

I tried everything to fix ammonia build up. (Seriously.)
  • Overnight Soak with my usually effective cloth diaper safe detergent.  For some reason just didn’t work at all anymore….and the ammonia burns from it on my child were insane.
  • Vinegar Soak.  (Hey- if you have hard water DON’T USE IT! You’re problems will be 10 fold)  Didn’t do squat… even in my soft water.
  • Stripping With Dawn.  Didn’t help.
  • Boiling Inserts.  Worked temporarily… until the next diaper wash day. Then ammonia was back.
So, I sat and thought a long hard while about what I could do. And then it popped into my head!

FISH TANK AMMONIA REMOVER!

Why not?! Fish are highly sensitive and if its safe for them, then chances are it wouldn’t bother my baby. Had it been done before? Do I dare do it if I can’t find anyone who has????

BUT- I was in luck!!!! (I did some Googling…)  Someone had thought of it before and had done it! AND IT WORKED!

See it here:  http://charsworld.com/2010/06/ammonia-is-gone/

So, I dug out our Fish Tank Ammonia Remover and gave it a try myself. I let the freshly washed diapers soak in the Fish Tank Ammonia Remover water for 10 hours.

Do you think it worked?

YES! IT DID! Our cloth diapers are clean again! My baby doesn’t wake up red anymore! The diaper doesn’t burn my nose or make my eyes water when I open the door to her room (yep, it got THAT bad) . Actually, there is no smell at all in our diapers when she pees… except, well., fresh pee (which isn’t too stinky).

I do have a personal rendition to the Char’s World method that I personally like better:

I use 4 Tank Buddies Fish Tank Ammonia Remover ($3.50 for 8 Tablets at WalMart) dissolved in 6 gallons of warm water and put in CLEAN, DRY 15 Fitted Cloth Diapers/PreFolds/Flats OR up to 30 INSERTS in the water. If the water isn’t covering the diapers/inserts then I add just enough water so they are all covered by the water. I then take my hands and agitate them for a minute to mix the solution through the diapers.

Then I let them soak 6-8 hours.

I take the diapers out, sopping wet, and put them into the washer and I run it with NO DETERGENT on Hot Wash/Cold Rinse and add a 2nd rinse.

Voila! Clean, ammonia free diapers!  AND  To keep ammonia away this is my routine:

1. I rinse EVERY dirty diaper out with super hot water , after each diaper change before I throw them into the dry pail.

2. Once a week to every 3 weeks I use 1 ½ to 2 tablespoons of bleach to my large load of diapers (I DO NOT add covers or PUL to this wash and I DILUTE the bleach into the water FIRST, let it fill, then add the diapers)

3. I wash every 2-4 days with BioKleen Free and Clear Powder.  I have SOFT WELL WATER.
  • I do one warm/cold “auto” wash in my he Top Loader with ½ scoop of BKFC
  • I start a Large/Extra Large Wash with Hot/Cold Wash on JUST FITTEDS AND INSERTS FIRST in my he Top Loader with 1 scoop of BKFC, stop the wash after they agitate a moment and let them soak 45 minutes, then I add the Covers back and start the cycle where I left off with it and 2nd rinse them.
  • Then I do one more hot/cold auto wash because of my soft water to get the rest of detergent out.
My daughter has extremely sensitive skin and Eczema, by the way. She hasn’t had one rash or any reaction to her diapers since the Fish Tank Ammonia Remover treatment on them. The diapers are in great condition still because this method is GENTLE opposed to other methods (remember its safe for LIVE fish & aquatic plants!) I definitely recommend this solution to anyone for removing ammonia from diapers.

Give the Fish Tank Ammonia Remover a try- you will be amazed at how awesome it works and easy it is to do.

*Please keep in mind this is a "Proceed at your own risk" method.  I can guarantee this is not recommended by manufacturers and in my opinion, while it looks safe, should be used as a last resort after exhausting other options. -Julie, Cloth Diaper Geek

This is not really a blog post...about Pinterest. Well kind of.

So lately I'm not feeling it.  How about you?  I feel like we broke up, like I can't look or it will open old wounds.  Or I'm just lazy and Pinterest will remind me of all the things I wanted to do and once was inspired to do when now all I really want to do is write a blog post about not doing them.

What do you think?  I've seen a lot of blog posts and contests and things that look like too much work and they have to do with Pinterest.  I've also seen a lot of info about Pinterest and their possible legal issues, but I know they meant well when they thought up this virtual pinboard/bookmarking site, so I'm not sure what to think of it or them.

Right now I'm just sort of relaxin' or as my 8yr old daughter would say, I'm "chillaxin" and I'm afraid if I look at Pinterest I might get inspired and have to get up.  I kind of like my chair right now.

But this is today and tomorrow, who knows, I might have this brilliant Pinterest inspired promotion I just have to move forward with or I might just peek and then get stuck getting all inspired and stuff.

Calling all cloth diaper retailers, both present and future!

I decided to start adding some posts to the Cloth Diaper Geek blog that will be dedicated to cloth diaper retailers and to those interested in starting their own business.  Navigating the world of wholesale accounts, manufacturers and distributors can be confusing and I know a little guidance would have been appreciated when I was first starting my business back in 2007.

First let me start by explaining the differences as I know them.

Manufacturers, they're generally the creator/inventor and the maker of the products you seek to sell on your website or in your retail store.  Often they deal directly with issuing and managing retailer accounts but in some instances they have sales representatives whom you'll deal with if you're in their territory.  Ideally the manufacturers facilities house the sew shop where the products are sewn but as a brand grows you can expect to have manufacturers ordering from larger sew shop operations and even from overseas.

Distributors, these folks usually go between a manufacturer and a retailer.  They'll be issued exclusive rights to an area, often an entire country, to sign up new retailers.  They stock the manufacturers products, take wholesale orders and ship to the retailers.

One benefit of using a distributor, if you're a retailer, is often that they will stock more than one manufacturers products and this is a HUGE perk for small businesses.  The cool thing is that they'll usually and hopefully, have one minimum order amount that can be met by ordering multiple products and product lines AND this should mean they have them all in stock and will ship your order in one shipment which saves you greatly on shipping.

If you're a small business and don't have a huge amount to invest in inventory then using a distributor is helpful.  It allows you the opportunity to carry a wider selection of products without having to create separate wholesale accounts and meet order requirements with each and every brand you seek to carry.

So, do you want to know some of the Distributors I have come to know and love?

  • Knickernappies!  Knickernappies is both a cloth diaper manufacturer and a distributor.  Through Knickernappies you have access to not only their brand of cloth diapers and accessories, you'll also be able to order Wolbybug Diapers and Accessories, Palm Tree Diapers, Baltic Amber, Diaper Sprayers, Pregnancy Test Strips, Feminine Products, Prefold cloth diapers and more!  With just one order from Knickernappies you can have a pretty great selection and start for your new store.

For more information on Knickernappies wholesale opportunities contact heather(at)knickernappies.com or click HERE to apply for a wholesale account.  Knickernappies currently has an initial opening order requirement of only $500 and no minimum re-order amounts to be met.

  • Eyla's Imports!  Eyla's is a Denver based distributor of Sweet Pea Cloth Diapers and Accessories, Dress Me Up! Organic products and Momma-Nature personal care products for mama and baby.  Again, with one order from Eyla's you can have organic baby toys, teethers, gifts, a variety of cloth diapers and acccessories and a line of vegan personal care products that are safe for the whole family.

For more information on Eyla's Imports wholesale opportunities contact ashore(at)eylasimports.com or click HERE to apply for a wholesale account. Eyla's currently has NO minimum opening order amount which is practically unheard of.  They give you no reason not to add their products to your store's lineup.

*Both Knickernappies and Eyla's Imports offer drop-shipping for their retailers.

  • Kelly Wels, Changing Diapers Books Wholesale!  Changing Diapers:  The Hip Mom's Guide to Cloth Diapering is an excellent cloth diaper resource, perfect addition for making up your own cloth diaper starter kits and for retailing in your store or even lending out to newbies.  Kelly is also now the exlusive USA Distributor for the Lunette Cup, a reusable menstrual product.  Contact Kelly at Changing Diapers Wholesale for a price sheet and wholesale information.
So, this is just a start to my new cloth diaper retailer or retailer wanna-be resources.  Look for more posts to come!

Do you have a distributor you think I should add to this list?  Email me!

Pocket Lovers Guide to the Cloth Diaper Galaxy

I’m a pocket diaper user. Always have been, and prior to becoming a little more adventurous in my cloth diapering abilities, I would’ve said always will be. To be honest it’s because of this little writing gig that I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone by trying different kinds of diapers. They aren’t as scary as I once thought! Let me be your guide…

Here’s my Pocket User’s Guide to the Cloth Diaper Galaxy:

The Prefold & Cover: Ack! A diaper that does not have a pocket and you put what where? It’s not that hard; in fact it’s very easy. Think of it this way: instead stuffing the pocket what you’re doing is wrapping or folding cloth, securing it to your baby with pins, Snappi or a diaper cover. You can also fold the prefold into thirds and lay it neatly in the cover, then secure the cover on your baby.

The Fitted: Ah the fitted cloth diaper was one of the most confusing diapers for me to figure out so think of it this way: It’s like a pocket but the opening is sewn together and the insert is already stuffed into the cover. It also is not waterproof so you need to have a cover or a wool longie, shortie or skirtie.

The AIO (All-in-One & AI2): Everything you need is right in one convenient place. No stuffing or unstuffing required. You’ve got the cover and insert…all in one! Ta da! Please note though that the All In One takes longer to dry and can be more difficult to clean b/c of everything sewn in together. AI2s and AI3s work by having parts of the diaper snap into the cover so you can remove the inserts when you need to dry them.

Are you a pockets lover too? Have you ventured out into the cloth diaper galaxy?

DIY: Homemade Haircuts. They won't know if I screw up right?

My mama is a hair stylist so I won't say I'm totally clueless when it comes to cutting hair, but since she's always able to do my hair and everyone else in the family for no charge, there's never been much need for me to test my knowledge.

With the shaggy, semi-curly look that my twins have, combined with the fact that they're 5 yrs old and will have NO clue if I really mess up...I decided to just go for it the other day when we noticed they needed a trim.

Hey, it's green because you don't have to drive anywhere, it's frugal because you don't have to pay anything and depending on your kids hair type it can be pretty easy to fake it til' you make it!

So how about you?  Do you cut your family's hair?  Have you ever messed up?

How to tell if your cloth diapers PUL is defective or on it's way OUT!

I had the misfortune of the PUL (PolyUrethane Laminate) on my pocket diapers coming detached from the fabric. I did all the right things when washing my diapers though – kept the water temperature below 100* F, only dried the covers on one low heat cycle and occasionally I did one cycle on high heat b/c it helps seal the PUL. Still as I was stuffing the inserts one day I felt the PUL start to stick to my wedding ring. I turned the pocket inside and out and this is what I found.
Noticing the problem with the PUL on that one diaper prompted me to look at the other diapers in my stash. Sadly, six of my diapers were starting to detach. I did contact the retailer I purchased the diapers from and she’s replacing the defective diapers. Thank goodness for excellent customer service. I thought that I’d show you all what my diapers looked like so you can make sure your PUL doesn’t have the same problem. One thing that I noticed is that the inside of my diapers when I was stuffing them felt very soft, almost too soft. It was the PUL separating that was soft. See how the PUL is loose?
You want for the PUL on your diapers to be attached so well that you cannot tell it’s not part of the cover. It should be one entity, the same. Just like this picture below.
Hopefully this post sheds some light on what good and bad PUL look like and how to tell if you should contact the retailer or manufacturer of your diapers.

So, have you experienced issues with any of your cloth diapers PUL?
