Frugal Fluff: Cloth Diaper Brands that won’t break the bank!

Guest Post by Brie Latini

Congrats! You have decided to cloth diaper your child! It’s going to be an amazing new world for you! Just imagine piles of cute, fluffy diapers in place of paper ones; fun patterned wet-bags to store used dipes instead of smelly, overflowing diaper pails; your pick of fun colors, patterns and materials instead of plain old white disposables! Now, just open up that wallet so we can get that stash start-What? Oh, money is tight? I understand- cloth diapers do require an initial investment and for many, putting out a large chuck of money simply isn’t doable in today’s economy. Still, a tight budget does not mean you have to give up your intent to cloth diaper! Here are four brands that will have your baby swathed in fluffy goodness without breaking the bank!

Econobum (by Cotton Babies)
Econobum is a simple, no-frills cloth diapering system that can take you from birth to potty training for a mere $100! A complete kit contains six waterproof, one-size, snap covers and 24 pre-fold diapers. The pre-folds are unbleached cotton, soft and absorbent, and the covers can be adjusted to fit babies and toddlers of all sizes! This is the most straightforward of the systems and you won’t find an array of colors, patterns or materials. But if you want to commit to cloth, Econobum can help you do so for the less then a month’s worth of disposables for a newborn! (I should note that of the four diaper systems listed here, Econobum is the only one we haven’t tried, as it is relatively new and came out after we had established our diaper stash!)

Flip (by Cotton Babies)
We are HUGE fans of the Flip diapering system in our home! This is an extremely versatile, easy-to-use cloth diapering system that offers microfiber, organic, and disposable inserts! Flip, unlike the Econobum, doesn’t require any folding. The Flip is a two-piece system that uses a soft, whisper-light, waterproof cover and your choice of insert. You simply snap the cover according to size, lay the insert inside, and put it on your baby! I’ve found that the Flip is able to withstand the most epic of blowouts with nary a leak! Flips come in a variety of colors and you have to option to customize a “Day Pack” that contains two covers and six inserts! Flips run from $16.95 for a single set of one cover and one insert to $59.95 for an organic cotton “Day Pack” that contains 2 covers and six inserts! You can even mix-and-match your sets, choosing your colors and insert type! As you expand your stash, you will find that Flip covers can also be used to cover fitteds and pre-folds.

The Smartipants diapering system is fun and user friendly! A one-size, snap system that is available in a huge array of colors, Smartipants make cloth diapering as easy as using a ‘sposie! Each diaper consists of a shell and an absorbent insert- just slip the insert into the sleeve, snap to fit and go! After, just toss the whole diaper into your pail. There’s no need to remove the insert because it will agitate out in the wash! No risking getting poo under your fingernails for Smarti-parents (the company’s shout out to their users!). Smartipants start at $14.99 for an individual diaper (one-size, snap shell and one insert) and also are available in packs of three for $36.95. Each month, Smartipants offers an exclusive color that is only available for a short time! The company also offers covers and newborn diapers, but to get the most bang for your buck, stick with the one-size!

Kawaii Baby

Oh. Oh, the Kawaii Baby’s! Can you hear my heart beating? It’s because right now, my Kawaii is the true love of my stash! My first Kawaii was a gift, and I fell in love with the soft, suede-like material of the shell, the soft, stretchy fabric, the amazing absorbency without bulk, and the ridiculous cuteness! Off I ran to computer to order myself a millionbillion more, and then my infatuation became true love. Kawaii Baby’s are amazingly priced at $6.99-$11.20 per diaper! Um, you read that right! That includes a nighttime diaper for $7.50 and a luxurious bamboo minky for $11.20. Each diaper comes with a shell and two microfiber inserts. Available in a wide array of colors and patters, these are diapers that look expensive but have a budget price tag. We have found them to work extremely well, absorbing anything my heavy-wetter has to throw at them and still being able to fit nicely under a pair of jeans- a biggie for the cloth-diapering mother of a boy! Kawaii’s give us all of the perks of an expensive diaper- luxurious feel, top performance, cute colors and prints- for a fraction of the price! AWE-SOME!
Don’t take my word for it. You can check out all of these diapers yourself by visiting their websites for more information. Econobum, Flip, Smartipants and Kawaii Baby can all be found on Facebook! There, you can gather even more product information and also have the chance to ask questions of the manufacturers and consumers alike! Do your homework before you buy, but know that there are brands out there that offer quality performance at a budget friendly price! Kermit was right. It’s not easy being green, but at least you don’t have to break the bank!
Happy diapering!
