Grovia O.N.E Cloth Diaper, Should you buy it?
Cloth Diaper Geek sent me a GroVia O.N.E. cloth diaper and when I opened the package, the first thing I noticed was how delicious this diaper is. Truly. It’s velvety soft, thick, and scrumptious. It’s a diaper you’ll drool over. It’s a diaper you will want close to your baby’s soft skin. It’s a diaper you’re going to want to fill your stash with. If I didn’t already have a full stash, I could see myself purchasing twenty four GroVia O.N.E. cloth diapers and nothing else and being perfectly content. It’s that awesome. GroVia has always boasted a great variety of fun prints, and this particular print, Chesapeake Bay, is found exclusively at Diaper Junction and The Natural Baby Co. My son is especially fond of it and gets a bit jealous when his sister wears it.
GroVia and I go WAY back!
First of all, I have to tell you that I have a pretty good relationship with GroVia products. I’ve loved them ever since I won a GroBaby Hybrid/AI2 from a Kelly’s Closet Black Friday sale back when my six year old was an infant. I have since sold that diaper—I wish I hadn’t now—but I kept the booster because it was so trim and absorbent. I can throw that six year old, tiny insert into any pocket and instantly boost absorbency without any bulk. Even now, that tiny little GroBaby insert is still soft, absorbent, and going strong!
When my first daughter was about a year old I ended up reviewing a GroVia AIO diaper for another blog, and I fell in love with the brand all over again. I’m not usually a fan of side-snapping cloth diapers but I would have filled my stash with their AIOs because that’s how much I loved them. The GroVia AIO was a super trim, well fitting, extremely absorbent, and oh so luscious diaper.
With my third child, I used the GroVia Newborn AIO on her tiny, seven pound, skinny little body and it was just as yummy as the other GroVia products I had tried. Having had such a positive history with the brand, when I heard about the GroVia O.N.E. diaper, which hoped to solve all the most common cloth diapering issues, my interest was piqued. Again, with a full stash, I could not justify buying one just to try. But now that I have one, I really wish I could have more. It is truly the only night time cloth diaper I will ever need.
Putting the GroVia O.N.E. to the test!
I put this thing to the toughest tasks I had right off the bat. I got it in the mail the day we were driving seven hours to visit my parents and my thirty-three pound, two and a half year old son wore it while we were away from home. I didn’t prep the diaper because GroVia’s website says it doesn’t need to be prepped. I made sure I had some extra clothes for my boy because I admit I didn’t quite believe them, but straight from the package and without having been washed, it performed great with no leaking. After I washed it at my parents’ house, we skipped to our most difficult task—night time cloth diapering my son. Even my favorite diapering solutions don’t always contain the volumes of liquid he produces while he sleeps. My husband and I have just come to accept wet waistbands on early morning jammy bottoms. I was prepared for much of the same with the O.N.E. diaper, but was delightfully surprised to find that he woke up dry the first time we used it. Completely dry! I honestly didn’t think that was possible. If a cloth diaper can handle my solid little guy through the night, then it can handle any task.
Next, I put it on my fourteen pound, five month old daughter. I used it during the day for her. We were still away at the time so her cloth diapers weren’t getting changed as often as I would have liked, but it continued to work great. She used just the smallest soaker on the smallest setting for her daytime use. The next time I tried it on her was at night. I used the largest soaker alone with the diaper adjusted to medium and there was some leaking. This particular night she nursed more than normal and I didn’t change her at all. Maybe this isn’t a good idea, but I try to pick a diaper that will get her through the night so I can nurse her and put her to sleep without either of us having to wake up too much for a diaper change unless it’s absolutely necessary. I’m not sure whether the leakage was due to the amount of absorbency I’d chosen or the fact I’d sized the diaper at a medium, so I tried it again. I kept it at a medium setting and added the second, smaller soaker and there were no leaks this time.
Since these initial tests, I’ve decided this is my son’s night time cloth diaper and I’ve tried to save it for him to use. When my daughter got a nasty rash on her bum thanks to a change in my diet, I worked all day long to keep her bum dry and fresh with loosely pinned, uncovered flat diapers. I wasn’t sure what to do at night, though. I knew that the wrong night diaper could be disastrous for her little wounds and unfortunately waking up every hour to change her diaper wasn’t a good option. I had almost settled on putting her in an uncovered fitted and wrapping her in a fleece blanket until I remembered how soft the stay-dry layer of the O.N.E. diaper is and how much absorbency it has. It seemed like the perfect solution to her rash an my need for sleep. I applied some breastmilk, then coconut oil with essential oils, and finally some unpetroleum jelly (which is completely cloth diaper safe, by the way) to her bum. I used the O.N.E. on her again with both soakers and when she awoke the next morning and I changed her, the diaper barely felt wet and her skin was continuing to show improvement. I just wish I could have had two O.N.E.’s so her bum could have the same treatment the next night as well, but we survived without it while it was washed and dried.
How does the GroVia O.N.E. fit?
In addition to superb performance, this diaper has great fit options for both of my children with a nice, wide tummy panel for babies who are skinny or chubby, and three rise snaps. Based on my experience with cloth diapers over the past six years, it seems to be cut big—which is a good thing. This means that the range of babies the diaper fits is greater. It also has three options for absorbency. It comes with two soaker pads that snap in: one large and one small. You can use both together, or just one. The most innovative feature is the removable velcro. Diapers with velcro closures are great for a nice, tight fit at the waist and for quick diaper changes. However, velcro also wears out much more quickly than snaps which is why it’s losing popularity among cloth diaper users. However, with the O.N.E. diaper, you have the best of both worlds. If you prefer velcro to snaps, you can snap on a row of velcro to the tummy panel and closure tabs and fasten the diaper with the velcro. If you’re like me and you prefer snaps, you can save the velcro for when your babies are in the care of a sitter. Unfortunately, this velcro panel posed the only problem I really had with the diaper—and the problem is a nit-picky thing, really. Sometimes when opening the diaper with the velcro attached, it had fastened so tightly that it came un-snapped from the closure tabs, or it was difficult to open altogether. This might actually be a good thing since you’re supposed to remove the Velcro before washing, but then again, I don’t like the idea of having one more step to do (removing and reattaching velcro) when getting my diapers from the wash to my baby’s bum. In my opinion, it would be great if the velcro were designed to stay on the diaper through the wash if using Velcro closure diapers is your thing.
The GroVia O.N.E washes and dries very quickly. I air dry the outer layer and machine dry the inserts. I love that they can be removed completely from the diaper because my Grovia AIO always took so long to line dry that I got impatient and machine dried it regularly which eventually killed it after about two years of solid, hard use. I don’t have to worry about that with the O.N.E. Granted, having removable inserts means an extra step between washing and using, but since these inserts would take a longer time than most to air dry, I think it’s necessary.
As I understand how little time you have as a parent and that you may not have the luxury of actually reading through this entire review, here’s the long and short of it for your convenience:
Pros:
Fits well
Cut big, can be sized small
Soft
Very absorbent
More sizing, fit, and absorbency options than most diapers
Two soakers
Luscious materials
No prep necessary
Closure options: Velcro or Snaps
Good night time protectionCons:
Velcro doesn’t always stay attached when removing the diaper and the velcro has to be removed when washed.
May be a bit bulky depending on what you’re used to
Overall, this diaper is one of the best I have ever used. Ever. It’s not uncommon for AIO diapers to cost upwards of $30 these days. This AIO has all the luxurious qualities of the higher priced brands but only costs $22. You’re getting amazing quality at an awesome price and if you’re on the market for some new AIOs in your stash, I highly recommend snatching this one up right away!
