Homemade Halloween Costumes: Shrek’s Princess Fiona and Shrek Babies

This post may contain affiliate links

Today the mad rush starts for me to throw together somewhat homemade Halloween costumes for my kids.  As they get older each year their costume ideas get increasingly complicated and we’re resorting more and more to store bought accessories to complete their homemade look.

This year I had a request for an “Army Man” but without buying a costume in a bag I’d have to sew the whole outfit and I think it’s out of my scope of sewing expertise.  I promised we’ll keep an eye out this year for kids size army clothes and hopefully have what we need for next year.

The only other request was a Steve from Minecraft costume, and again, with me having waited until I have only two days to pull this off I decided we needed to pass on that idea.

As it stands today, I’ll have a sassy 10yr old daughter who will look cool in some way, she’s not sure what or how yet.  A 7yr old Ghost and a 7yr old Zombie.

This got me looking back on past homemade costumes.  I used to love when all three matched.  Below are the pictures from 3 yrs ago when they were Princess Fiona and Shrek Babies.  This was one of my favorite years, I couldn’t believe how perfectly the costumes turned out.

From head to toe, I sewed it all!  The only accessories purchased were the wig and crown.

I’ll try to get some more pictures up in future posts of our other Homemade Halloween Costumes.  This will have to do for now!

Do you make or come up with your own costumes or purchase store bought or used ones?

These are really cute! I am just not ‘on the ball
    — I will gather ‘supplies’ for a costume, then when the time comes, we end up in store bought outfits…

How creative! My oldest daughter is a fashion design major and I’ve been sewing since I was 12 so between the two of us we usually come up with something fun for the younger kids. This last year it was Alice in Wonderland theme and the year before that they were lock shock and barrel from nightmare before Christmas. I think we’re going to do Batman villains this year but I’m not sure.

Shrek babies! Love it. Homemade costumes are the best, but sometimes you just can’t do it all. I really detest spending money on costumes, so it’s out of desperation lol. I was made a Darth Vader helmet with cardboard and black duct tape. I was super impressed with myself with that one, and to this day, my boy reminds me of how happy he was with it. Mommy won Halloween that year. If you get a chance look up the video of the toddler stickman costume, I promise you will cry laughing.
