How to use Wrap Style Baby Carriers and why you should!

Wrap Style Carriers are a must-have for new moms and dads!

If there’s one piece of baby gear I consider a must-have and an absolute tragedy if you never got a chance to own or use one, it’s the Wrap Style Baby Carrier.  Wrap carriers are great for new moms and dads and essential to reducing the stress of caring for a newborn.

Life changes pretty drastically when your new little one is born.  Dishes pile up, cleaning gets put off, grocery shopping becomes a chore and caring for siblings, pets and yourself takes some serious multi-tasking.  <—Add a fussy, clingy or colicky newborn to the mix on top of that and you’ve got a recipe for exhaustion.

Wrap Style Carriers like the Boba Wrap and Moby Wrap will become your savior!  The problem?  Sometimes they can seem really complicated, after all, you are looking at one super long piece of fabric, likely reaching from floor to ceiling.

The good news about Wrap Style Carriers?  They aren’t as complicated to use as they might first appear, in fact they’re quite easy to use and forgiving.  They’re stretchy, accommodate babies of various ages from preemie to approximately 18 months.

So how do you “wrap” a Wrap Style Carrier?

You’re in luck!  There is a wealth of youtube videos available to teach you just how to use and wear a Wrap Style Carrier!

1.  A sweet, and handsome, papa shows us how he wears his newborn daughter in a Moby Wrap

2. How to wear your older baby demonstrated by Boba

3. How to nurse while wearing baby in a wrap style carrier

4. How to wear twins in a wrap style carrier

5. More on tandem babywearing

*Important Note:  Attempting a back carry should only be done using a woven (non-stretchy) wrap.  Check out the Girasol for a great woven wrap.

I wish my baby loved being in her wrap! At four months she is really curious and hates being held in so close; she fights against the wrap. She wants to see everything! Maybe she will like it again once she’s a bit bigger and can see over the shoulder straps better.

One MAJOR MAJOR safety note that you may want to consider adding: Back carries (or the tandem carry that you have here) should ONLY be done with NON-STRETCHY wraps. This means not the Moby or Boba wrap. Usually they are done with woven wraps, which don’t have the same give. A baby could easily flip out of a back carry with a woven wrap. I know my old Moby manual showed a back carry, but they’ve since removed it due to safety issues with back carries and stretchy wraps. Otherwise, this is a great beginner guide to using a stretchy wrap for new babies! We loved our Moby, and have moved on to woven wraps and back carries. (I’m sorry if I’m repetitive, I’d just hate for someone’s baby to get hurt. Overall wrapping is very safe and comfortable for baby & adult! :)
