Don't be intimidated by wool diaper covers!
Have you been thinking about trying out wool covers but have been intimidated by the cost and care? Do you think they are only for the winter? Simply NOT true.
First I would like to explain why wool really is the ultimate diaper cover. Unlike synthetic fabrics like PUL/fleece/TPU, wool breaths. Wool actually pulls moisture away from the diaper and therefore your baby's skin, allowing moisture to evaporate and keeping your baby drier. The more wetness that is evaporated, the better for your babys bottom. Wool is also naturally antimicrobial, unlike synthetics, and naturally keeps the bacteria away. Also, the lanolin that is naturally found in wool reacts with urine to neutralize it. Therefore, just allow it air dry, no cleaning between diaper changes.
Now you are probably thinking that sounds great but wool is so expensive and so fragile. Not true. First, as long as you don’t put it in the drier it only needs to be washed and lanolized about every 4 to 6 weeks. You will know it is time to relanolize when it begins to smell even when dry. Then, just clean and lanolize. Second, one cover in wool might cost more than a fleece/PUL cover but you won’t need as many covers (so ta da, not really more expensive). You could get away with just 2 wool covers used in rotation, using one while the other dries.
So, how do you care for it? Click here for how to wash and lanolize your wool covers.
Which wool should you choose?
Now that you are ready to buy some wool covers you might be wondering which wool cover is right for you. There are three different types of wool diaper covers here at HumBird.
1. European Wool Diaper Covers are made out of European boiled wool. While not traditionally soft, it has its own unique softness and becomes softer over time, is not itchy, and absorbs like no other wool out there. It is very durable which means soakers and longies made out of this look new for a long long time. The leg and waist bands on these soakers usually made from organic knit wool and are wide and soft. They work well day and night and are highly recommended for nighttime heavy wetters. These are available as longies, embroidered, or as normal soakers. Custom orders available.
2. Upcycled Wool Diaper Covers are made out of upcycled wool sweaters. The wool various with the sweater but most are very soft. The upcycled covers come with an extra soaker layer made out of the european boiled wool. They work equally well day and night and are also available as longies.
3. Merino Wool Interlock Diaper Covers are made out of a 100% organic merino wool interlock. They are super soft and stretchy. Due to this super softness they are not quite as durable as the European boiled wool but you would be hard pressed to find a cozier, softer wool. These make a great daytime cover. So, no time like the present to try out a wool diaper cover. To help inspire you I am offering 10% off all purchases using code “CDGEEK” at checkout. I used pul for my older babies. For my youngest I finally got brace enough to try wool and I would never go back!! I love it. We use wool covers, wraps, longies, shorties. We use upcycled at night and merino interlock or wool jersey in the day. And it is so cute. Also this was a really hot summer here and his bum was never warmer to the touch then his bare skin, wool truly is tepmerature regulating
