Humbird European Wool Diaper Covers and Woolies Review
We love wool around here. I mean, REALLY love! I am usually a fan of natural fibers anyway but, seriously, wool is magic! Over the years, we have used everything from wool diaper covers made from upcycled sweaters to beautiful handmade wool creations. I have never been disappointed.
So, what makes wool so magical? Lanolin. Lanolin is a wax secreted by the sebaceous glands of wool-bearing animals like sheep. For the animals, it helps them keep their wool waterproof, thus keeping their skin dry and warm. Translating to lanolin for cloth diaper use, the lanolin works to keep baby’s skin and the cover both feeling dry.
But, that's not all! Oh, yes. It gets better!
“Wool doesn't just keep moisture in, but it actually absorbs moisture itself while remaining dry to the touch. On top of that, it doesn't just absorb urine, it neutralizes it! The lanolin reacts with the urine to break it down into water and salt.”
So, not exactly magic but, come on, SCIENCE! Super cool, right?
So, when cloth diapering which wool is right for the job or is it all created equal? Well, I can’t say that I have ever had a bad experience with wool diaper covers since most of the issues I have had ended up being not enough lanolin. But, not all wool is equal. (For more information on types of wool check out this post about how wool works for cloth diapers!) That being said, I am VERY impressed with my HumBird Woolies made from boiled European wool.
About Humbird European Wool Diaper Covers
These Humbird wool covers are a powerhouse! Thick and sturdy, yet soft and comfortable. They are as functional as they are beautiful! The colors are vibrant and while I noticed a very slight coloration of the wash water during the first wash, there was no transfer of color onto the lighter colored fabrics.
At first, I thought they were sized somewhat large, but after trying them on my 2 1⁄2 year old, I realized how well they accommodated our larger fitted cloth diapers. This slightly wider crotch was perfect for the extra bulk of an overnight diaper. We did size down for daytime use over flats, but the wide waistband and leg cuffs allow for a wide ranges of sizes as well.
Aside from the beautiful and high quality materials, HumBird woolies are beautifully constructed as well. The seams are serged for strength and durability and her applique options are
adorable, too!
Whether you are already using wool or you are curious about this miracle of nature, HumBird Woolies are worth it!
