Teach Your Baby Sign Language at Every Diaper Change
Many parents are getting on board with baby sign language [the practice of using American Sign Language vocabulary with hearing babies] and enjoying the many benefits.
One of the biggest challenges of signing with your baby can be just remembering to do it! Building it into your daily routines is one of the easiest ways to make sure you don’t forget, and since babies need their diaper changed many times throughout the day, changing time can be a great time to practice signing.
You can certainly use the signs for “diaper” and “change” at changing time, but there are LOTS of signs that are more exciting for your little one! Here are 3 of my favorite changing time activities:
1. Animal Pictures
Keep some photos of animals or soft books with animal images near the changing area and let your little one hold them. Once your hands are free and your babe is all cleaned up, take a moment to show him the signs.
2. More Please!
Take the time while you’re up close and personal with your baby to sing a favorite song or blow raspberries on that sweet belly. If your baby enjoys it, you can show her the sign for “more” and do it again.
3. All Done
Let your baby know changing time is “all done” by signing it before you pick him up and move on with your day.
If you’d like to learn more about baby sign language, I am offering a FREE week-long e-course starting Wednesday, Oct. 1st. You can sign up HERE and short video lessons will be delivered right to your inbox.
