I have to admit, when I opened up the box containing Stonyfield’s NEW 100% Grass-fed Whole Milk Yogurt I wondered what it was all about.  We know ‘grass-fed’ livestock is better for you but do we really all understand why?  After taste testing ALL the yogurt I was sent I set off on a mission to better understand WHY Stonyfield has created a grass-fed yogurt and WHY it’s better for us, better for farmers and better for our earth.

What does grass-fed mean and can cows make milk with ‘just’ grass?

Of course you can!  Prior to WW2 grass-fed was the norm.  After WW2 livestock began being fed more grain and corn in order to maximize production and cut cost.  The problem is that cows are designed to consume low-grade protein, aka grass-not grains, corn or supplements.  How can they live on just grass you ask?  Multiple stomachs allow a cow, through fermentation, to convert low-grade proteins to high-grade proteins, which is healthier for them and allows them to thrive on grass only.

Fact:  Did you know grass fed cows are smaller and produce milk more efficiently than non-grass fed dairy cows?

Why does it matter what you feed a dairy cow?

Grains are starch heavy and change the ph of a cows rumen.  Changing the environment within the rumen affects bacterial growth and determines the types of fatty acids and substances excreted in the cow’s meat and milk making it not only taste differently, it can make it less healthy for us and can make digestion harder on the cows.

What you should know?  The term grass-fed (with regards to dairy products) can be applied to any animals that obtain 30% or more of their diet from grazing.  That means that the additional 70% of their diet may still come from grain, corn, soy and other non grass-feed supplements.  This is why it’s important to look for 100% grass-fed dairy products like Stonyfield.

About Stonyfield’s 100% Grass-fed Whole Milk Yogurt

Stonyfield’s NEW 100% Grass-fed whole milk yogurts are

  • Flavorful
  • Certified Organic
  • 100% Grass fed
  • Whole milk
  • Non-GMO
  • Artificial Hormone-free
  • Protein rich

My personal favorites are…well all of them!  In our house we’re big on plain yogurt with local honey so the plain yogurt went fast.  I personally LOVE Blueberry and Strawberry so those tasted divine to me.  I found the yogurt to be rich and creamy, the fruit was sweet and tasty but not too sweet and the packaging is easily recyclable which I love.

My hope is that Stonyfield’s Yogurts will take over the dairy aisle in your supermarkets so that everyone will have access to such healthful, natural and delicious yogurts.  To see if Stonyfield is available in a store near you please visit Stonyfield’s store locator here.  Don’t see it in your local supermarkets?  Just ask!  Often grocers will give new products a try, especially if you request it!

So what do you think about grass-fed products and do you already buy grass-fed?  Comment letting me know your thoughts!
