Twin Tip: You will forget who is who in old photos. Take notes!

I forgot which kid is which!

It was bound to happen.  I look back and think to myself,“Julie, what in the world were you thinking?”  My sons were twins, no doubt, but due to an oversight at the hospital no one told me they were identical twins.  Being slightly different weights at birth, I was able to tell them apart and pretty much assumed they were fraternal twins.  Friends, relatives and strangers insisted they looked identical but I wasn’t convinced.

At my two week postpartum checkup I said something to the doctor and he said “They ARE identical, didn’t we tell you?”  Whoopsie!

I was thrilled to learn they were identical but I still swore I could tell them apart.  In photos I would remark, Spencer is in the blue, Mason is in the green-I’ll always remember that!  Fast forward 7 years later and all their pictures from about birth through 6months of age….I’m clueless.  I don’t know who is wearing what, I can’t recall why I thought it was a good idea to think one always wears the green or blue, etc.

I was never unable to tell them apart in real life but in photos, well now I haven’t got a clue.  It wasn’t until about 6-7 months of age when one son developed a slight condition that caused his head to get a little bigger than his brother that they became easier to tell apart in photos.

My Identical Twin Advice

Take notes!  While I don’t consider it a huge deal that I can’t tell them apart in photos, it would be nice to know in at least some of them.  I suggest putting the photos into separate files on the computer or label them in albums so you won’t forget.
