Thirsties OS AIO Diaper Review

I was sent a Thirsties One Size All In One diaper to review and I was very excited.  Thirsties Duo Wraps and Thirsties Sized Diaper Covers have long been my absolute favorite diaper covers and I’d always been interested in their other products but hadn’t tried any of them.  It’s easy to just stick with what you know and love and I’ve come to see the duo wraps as a great combination of fit and leak protection.  I am pleased to say that, despite some initial glitches, the Thirsties AIO diaper fits in well with what I expect from Thirsties brand diapers and it turned out to be a great addition to my AIO
stash.

The Thirsties AIO diaper is pretty simple in it’s design.  A trim soaker with three layers of microfiber covered in stay dry fabric is attached to the top of the diaper.  There is an additional layer of microfiber sewn next to the waterproof layer.  This makes four absorbent layers in all.

The diaper has a trim fit, fun print options, and dries quickly.  It’s one of the easiest cloth diapers I have ever used.

From my experience, most microfiber diapers need to be prepped only once before use.  However, I learned the hard way that this diaper works best when prepped (washed) at least three times.  Only after it leaked for both kids did I read the care instructions on the website and discover that you’re supposed to wash it up to three times before using it.  Whoops!  Of course, after both kids had used it once, it was properly prepped and it worked well. This is why one should always read directions first.  It’s just so hard when you have nice, new fluffy mail that you want to try out immediately!

Thirsties OS AIO diaper performance

The diaper performed just the way I expected a product from such a great brand would.  It consistently contained all the daytime leaks for both children, yes, even those of my two and a half year old son (32 lbs).  I tried it for one hour on him, then two, then three hours.  I tried it alone and with an extra soaker added.  It was leak-free no matter how I used it.  My favorite thing about it is the trim fit.  It slides under jeans nicely, which not all cloth diapers can do.  It also did well for my three month old (13+ lbs).  She needs cloth diaper changes more frequently and isn’t quite as heavy a wetter as her brother, so she doesn’t need quite as much leak protection.  Yet.

At night time, it performed as well as my son’s other microfiber AIO diapers.  Sometimes it leaked, sometimes it didn’t.  Whether or not it leaks seems to depend on how much my son pees that night and what type of insert I slip underneath the soaker pad.  What I did notice is that there was some wicking or compression leaks at night—meaning that the diaper was wet on the outside some of the time. With a well-fitting diaper, this is usually an indicator that there needs to be more absorbency, but I had already maxed out the amount of absorbency I could add for my son without the diaper starting to gap.  I also tried it as is during the night on my three month old and it did well.  She doesn’t actually need any extra night time protection yet because she only sleeps through the night about twenty percent of the time.

This diaper is a good choice for people who want a hassle free diapering system.  Normally, a diaper that is easy to use at the changing table (AIOs and pockets) is more difficult to wash.  Diapers that are more complicated to use at the changing table (prefolds, flats) are easy to wash.  This diaper is easy to use and washes and dries well.  I think it would be an especially good fit for someone who is just starting out using cloth diapers and needs time to transition fully into the world of the fluffy bums.

So, to overview my opinion of the Thirsties OS AIO Cloth Diaper after using it for a couple of weeks:

The pros:
trim
simple
easy to wash
dries quickly
daytime leak protection
cute print
very comparable to other microfiber AIOs
nice leg and tummy fit for my son
made in the USA

The cons:
not always suitable for night time use

Overall, I’d say this cloth diaper is a good one to have in your stash.  It’s cute, trim, easy to use, and washes well.  I definitely plan on keeping it in my regular stash rotation.  I give it a solid four out of five stars.
