Humbird Fitted Cloth Diaper and Wool Cover Review
Humbird is a handmade cloth diaper brand from Germany that is known for its quality, wool interlock covers. However, they also make luxurious fitted diapers and hybrid diapers—a hybrid of an AIO and a fitted diaper due to a hidden layer of fleece.
For this review, she sent me the HumBird Overnight Diaper in a size 3 one size diaper, which fits babies 12-40 pounds. I must say, OH MY GOODNESS, this is a night diaper to beat all night diapers. On the website they claim that they have had the diaper independently tested to hold 42 ounces, and I believe it! I have never seen a night diaper with more protection than this one, and this is coming from a mom whose three year old son pees through diapers with three added inserts at least once a week. The sizing options are great because as my son gets older and still needs diapers at night, I have a hard time finding diapers that still fit him. The HumBird size 3 fits him with room to spare so I don’t have to worry about snap and elastic marks on his sensitive skin, and I don’t have to wonder what on earth he will wear at night if he turns four and still wets his bed. The smaller range of the fitted diaper fits my one year old daughter well also.
The best thing about this amazing night diaper is that there are lots of insert options. The main soaker pad is super long—two to three times the length of the diaper depending upon which rise setting you use—and is made of 1 layer of organic bamboo velour and 3 layers of bamboo organic cotton fleece. It can be folded in many different ways to place the absorbency where you need it most and the velour is very soft and can be folded so that it lays against your baby’s skin. In addition, there is a doubler and a booster, and both are made of cotton bamboo fleece. To see detailed photos of the interior of this diaper please click here.
I used the diaper without either of these extra inserts and my 3 1/2 year old heavy duty wetter son wasn’t able to saturate it at night. In fact, I almost couldn’t feel that the diaper was wet from the outside when he woke up in the morning. It was only a little moist at the front. I tell you, I’ve tested a lot of diapers and found that many of them work well for night time, but this beats them all. It is SOOOOO good! If you’ve got a heavy wetter on your hands and you’ve tried everything to no avail, I’m certain that this diaper won’t let you down. It’s that good.
I’ll do my best to lay out the specs of this diaper for you. It’s got surged edges with enclosed elastics at the back and legs which are very gentle yet stretchy and contain messes nicely. I know this because anytime I put a new diaper on my daughter, she poops in it, and this one was no exception. It kept in the solids and it also kept the smell in pretty well—even uncovered—because it took me awhile to realize she’d soiled it. A feature about the Humbird that I found unique is that there are three snaps—the sockets not the studs—on the closure tabs so that if you’re snapping the diaper on a skinny baby, the sides of the front panel don’t droop and cause leakage. In addition, there are two crossover snaps on the outside of one of the closure tabs so the diaper can get very skinny! However, on the largest setting, you don’t need to use all three snaps and because the sockets and not the studs of the snaps are exposed to your baby’s hips, they shouldn’t leave a mark. I don’t use all three to close the diaper when putting it on my son and he had absolutely no mark left from the exposed socket.
The diaper has one row of snaps at the tummy and four sets of rise snaps. As I mentioned in the last paragraph, it comes with a very long insert that snaps in at one end and is lined with a bamboo cotton velour. In addition, there is a doubler that is also longer than the inside of the diaper—about the size of the soaker in a Smart Bottoms AIO or a Diaper Rite AIO. Finally, there is a tiny little booster, about half the length of a regular insert or soaker. All the fabric of this diaper is made of a bamboo cotton blend and is a soft, super thick, super sturdy material.
It’s amazing. It washes easily and shockingly, dries quickly. Due to the thickness of the diaper I was sure that line drying just wouldn’t be an option, but I tried it anyway just to be thorough. I line dried it with my Imagine AIOs, my Thirsties AIO, and my Smart Bottoms AIOs and it took just as quickly to air dry as they did. I was delightfully surprised.
We also got a size 3 wool interlock cover. The size 3 is a tad big on my one year old, but it’s great for going over really fluffy diapers so I wouldn’t go any smaller for her when using it for the HumBird Overnight Diaper. It also fits my son very well over any non-waterproof diaper. I have always had knitted wool covers, so it’s fun to try an interlock cover for the first time. It’s stiffer and sturdier and doesn’t pill like a knitted cover does. This cover doesn’t come lanolized because Dawn wanted to keep costs down, but lanolizing a wool cover is super easy and cheap to do on your own. Actually, I didn’t realize it wasn’t lanolized and used it as is and it was fine—a little moist, but no leaks, which is how wool always acts when covering cloth diapers. Wool naturally has lanolin in it, but often the processing of wool can strip that lanolin which is why it is often necessary to re-lanolize it.

If this were Dancing With the Diapers and I were a judge, this diaper would get a 10. It’s so, so good. It’s a great combination of good construction, functionality, softness, and an uber amount of absorbency. In seven years of cloth diapering, I’ve never seen this much absorbency in one diaper. Just saying. If night diapering is a problem for you, then I highly recommend this diaper. I am certain that it will solve all of your night time issues. Coupled with the wool interlock soaker, it would be hard to find a night diapering combo with more leak protection than this one.
