Hi ladies! My name is Elizabeth and I am the owner and designer at GEN-Y. I live in the Shenandoah valley of Virginia with my high school sweetheart husband and our four gorgeous kids (and an insane number of pets.) I have been cloth diapering for eight years, with two in cloth for the last five. I enjoy a little chaos, and in addition to my work at GEN-Y I cook, bake, read, garden, volunteer, homeschool, write, game, and horseback ride.
What inspired you to start your own line of cloth diaper covers? When I started cloth diapering my first little bundle I was a twenty one year old with some serious geek/goth going on, a tight budget, and a zero tolerance for leaky diapers. I wanted something that looked awesome, lasted forever, and kept my clothes pee free. I was seriously DIY at the time, and dying to open an Etsy. Coupled with my compulsive fabric purchasing habits, GEN-Y came together after a few months of pattern development.
Tell us about GEN-Y– Our covers are now made at a factory in Virginia. We have been thrilled to be able to find most of the materials for our covers from US sources as well.
What do you think sets GEN-Y apart from other cloth diapers/cover
manufacturers? On the surface, it is the wild and always changing prints. We have released almost a hundred limited edition prints. However, we are also set apart by our ongoing commitment to customer satisfaction, we even have a seamstress on staff for cover repairs or restyling.
How is your own personal style reflected in the GEN-Y line? In the prints! I have pretty eclectic tastes, so there is a wide appeal in the prints we produce; everything from punk to high fashion to Japanese import fabric prints.
What has been the most exciting goal met or achievement made by GEN-Y Diapers? Wow, there have been a lot! From our covers being featured in Cosmo, to two covers in a charity auction bringing in more than $1000! But my proudest moment continues to be that GEN-Y holds both the #1 and #2 ranking slots for covers on diaperpin.com. Our customers honest reviews make me feel like we are really contributing something to the cloth diapering world.
Favorite print? Is there a print or two that you'd consider your favorites or that hold a a special meaning for you? I can give you a top three : lol: in no particular order: Afternoon Outing, Amor, and Glitter Elephants. I am considering some tattoos later in the year inspired by these prints.
What are GEN-Y's goals for the future? Any upcoming big announcements or new products on the horizon? We are getting ready to start producing a bunch of new prints! Keeping up with us on Facebook or twitter is the best way to see what's new.
Elizabeth, what advice would you give to someone just making the switch to cloth diapers and what GEN-Y product would you recommend they try fist? I would suggest trying one of each style to see what fits your needs and routine. Cloth diapering is an art, not a science. There is no best product, just what works best for you.
